Quiet Threads: Connection in Lands of Nostalgia responds to the challenge of visualizing personal community by transforming individual experiences into a shared, tangible form. In a time marked by the dismantling of DEI initiatives and increased targeting of marginalized communities, this project addresses the urgent need for connection, care, and collective understanding.
Brand Guide
Logo
The Quiet Threads logo mark depicts interlocking threads, visually representing connection, care, and the quiet ways people are bound to one another. The form flows smoothly at an upward angle, reinforcing a sense of intimacy and hope. Paired with Helvetica Neue Bold Italic, the word mark is imbued energy, with the italicization introducing movement and warmth and preventing the identity from feeling stagnant.

Palette
The color palette is vibrant and filled with energy and should be balanced with neutrals, soft tones, and tactile references. Core colors establish a recognizable identity while neutrals, familiar patterns, and textures create space to evoke nostalgia, memory, and comfort. This balance is most fully realized in the final piece, where color becomes less about branding and more about emotional resonance, reflecting the layered, imperfect nature of personal histories.

Typography
Helvetica Neue serves as the primary typeface, giving the design system in a timeless and highly legible base. It provides clarity and consistency across applications. In contrast, Carrotflower introduces a handwritten quality that references the simple joy and honesty of human mark-making. This pairing creates a dialogue between structure and expression.
Survey
Quiet Threads started with a survey sent out to students and staff in graphic design as well as friends and family.

Wall Piece
The installation brings together 30 anonymous, machine-embroidered narratives about memory, family, and identity, suspended within a structured wooden frame. Each fragment holds a deeply personal story, while the system as a whole reveals patterns of shared grief, joy, and resilience. By combining fiber practices with digital fabrication, the work bridges intimacy and structure, emphasizing both individuality and interdependence.
Drawing from traditions such as Hmong story cloth, the piece positions textile as an archive of lived experience. Its material choices and participatory process reinforce the value of everyday narratives, especially those often overlooked or erased.
This design succeeds by making connection visible. It invites viewers not only to witness others’ experiences, but to recognize themselves within them, fostering empathy, solidarity, and a deeper understanding of what it means to belong.
